JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Do not judge my boldness, \nMy beloved Queen Mother. \nThat my pen is encouraged \nTo write you this letter.<\/p>\n\n

It\u2019s true that like the sun, \nFull of the light of grace, \nI behold you, in whom I cannot \nFix my unworthy gaze<\/p>\n\n

It is true that from infinity \nYou reach the very boundary, \nAnd my letter\u2019s pen is the tool \nTo touch it and come near.<\/p>\n\n

But, Lady, I am encouraged \nBy the same rare greatness \nThat you enjoy; for it is quite fitting \nFor greatness to be human.<\/p>\n\n

What encourages me is that you are my Mother, \nAnd I, an ungrateful daughter. \nYou are my sweet Lady, \nAnd I am your unworthy slave.<\/p>\n\n

What encourages me is the profession made \nMy Mother, in this house. \nOf the great Father Augustine, \nI am a Discalced Religious.<\/p>\n\n

With sighs and laments, \nI will water your beautiful plants, \nAnd since you are Mother and can, \nYou protect this your daughter.<\/p>\n\n

What I intend to write, \nI will tell you in a few words, \nThat it is not just to be a bother \nWhen I see you tired.<\/p>\n\n

The Evangelist Luke \nDeclares as truth established \nThat by the command of Caesar \nYou embark on your journey.<\/p>\n\n

I am told that in your kin \nYou find no shelter or inn, \nAnd finally, I am told, Lady, \nThat you are near to childbirth.<\/p>\n\n

Ah, beautiful Dawn, how sorrowful \nMy soul flows from my chest, \nSeeing so many hardships faced \nBy the one whom my affection idolises. \n<\/p>\n\n

How is it possible that she suffers \nSuch horrific storms, \nThe ship that brings to the world \nThe purest, spotless bread?<\/p>\n\n

How is it possible \nthat the most fragrant rose \nAnd the most gallant lily \nBe seen, withered from vile plants? \n<\/p>\n\n

But I already know, you will tell me, \nYou suffer for my teaching<\/p>\n\n

I wish I could benefit \nFrom such a sovereign lesson.<\/p>\n\n

What I offer you \nIs to give you a poor shelter \nIn my cell, which although small \nIs wide in desire.<\/p>\n\n

There, better than in Bethlehem, \nYou will be able to stay in seclusion, \nBecause instead of a manger, \nYou will find a straw bed and blanket. \n<\/p>\n\n

My arms will be the cradle \nOr whoever is lucky enough \nTo have that Child sleep in them, \nWhom your womb has kept safe.<\/p>\n\n

If by chance He is cold, \nThe fire will not be needed, \nFor the flames of my heart \nWill replace them. \n<\/p>\n\n

I will make many caresses, \nSing Him a thousand tunes, \nEncourage Him with sighs, \nAnd ask for many graces.<\/p>\n\n

For as I desire \nTo love Him who loves me so much, \nI will not cease for a single moment \nTo explain my fine desires. \n<\/p>\n\n

I will tell how many perfections \nAre found in all the saints \nBy God’s providence, \nWhich are deposited in you.<\/p>\n\n

I will say that you are pure, beautiful, \nThat you are a prophet, you are holy, \nThat you are the Mother of God, \nAnd that there is nothing more. \n<\/p>\n\n

That I am a former diametral opposite \nTo all these graces, \nThat I, by mere imperfections, \nKeep my poor soul.<\/p>\n\n

Make, then, my pure Virgin, \nThat I fall into no more weaknesses, \nAnd since you are hope, \nIn you I place my hope. \n<\/p>\n\n

Console the sinners, \nThe whole Church praises you, \nI am a sinner and sad, \nConsolation awaits my soul<\/p>\n\n

My letter, Lady, is this: \nForgive me if it displeases you, \nFor being an ignorant woman, \nI hope you will excuse me. \n<\/p>\n\n

I write it on the 18th \nOf December, in your house, \nIn the year 1800, \nYour humble and poor slave<\/p>\n\n

Who adores your feet, \nhumbly and prostrated, \nMercies of the Saviour \nwho places her hope in you.<\/p>\n\n
